Teignmouth Harbour shipping services
A small port with a bustling efficient heart
For over 300 years this busy port has provided services for landing and shipping various cargoes to Europe and the Mediterranean as well as the Britsh Isles. Currently around 700 shipping movements take place each year.
There are working quays of 119m and 300m which are able to accommodate 4 vessels of suitable length. These are supported by 14,000 square metres of warehousing plus an extensive quayside storage. Locally mined ball clay is the main export. Imports include animal feed, fertiliser, blast-furnace slag, timber, building materials, stone, salt and coal.
Although the average vessel handled at the port is around 3000mt and 90m length overall, the individual records are 124m length overall, 5861 DWAT and 5.32m draft. Whilst the port is continuing to handle larger ships, it may be a while before some of these these records are surpassed. A team of experiensed Pilots handle the movements of vessels in and out of the harbour. Due to the tricky harbour entrance pilotage is compulsory.
For more information on the restrictions at Teignmouth please contact us.
Aiding the Pilots and Masters are the pilot boats ‘Syd Hook’ and the modern tug ‘Teign C’ with both available to support vessels with limited manoeuvrability. The Teign C also operates throughout the week as a plough dredger, maintaining the shipping channel to the port.
A small port perhaps, but with a bustling, efficient heart.
Maritime support amenities
The port of Teignmouth is able to provide a wide range of services. Local engineering works and Marine Electricians supports the vessel owners needs, whilst the short walk to town satisfies the crew with plentiful shopping, and historical pubs! Being a picturesque tourist venue there is local accomodation available throughout the year.
There are good links to the M5 so we are serviced well by coach along with Rail services. Exeter Airport is 25 minutes travel time away and serves a number of European cities as well as domestic flights within the UK.
